The Atom Huskies are in fact in the process of following suit in helping honor Canada's Fallen Heroes and also invite all teams participating in the Veteran's Memorial Tournament to do the same.
The idea of this project is to adopt ONE hero that has lost their life in one of Canada's missions, whether it was during war or peace time. The main thing to understand is that we are honoring a person that sacrificed their life in service of others and that we are not supporting the act of war. In addition it is very important to become familiar with the person that is chosen in order to ensure that not only the name but the memory of the person lives on forever. Furthermore the players get to wear the name of their chosen hero for the tournament and even the rest of the season.
Both Huskie teams have chosen heroes from a variety of mission's including most recently, Afghanistan. Some have chosen relatives who have severed and died for our country where as others picked a name of someone that interested them. This has been a great learning experience not only for our kids but for the parents aswell. In essence, you do not have to put a name on a jersey or even participate directly in the tournament to take part in this act of rememberence. You can simply participate by chosing someone who interests you or you have a conection with and learn a bit of who they were. What our boys and girl are finding is that there are some interesting stories out there about some outstanding Canadians. A good place to start is the Veteran's Affairs website as you can find many heroes names in Canada's books of Remembrance.
Please keep in mind that this is not a mandatory activity in order to be part of the tournament. Nor, do we expect all teams to go out and buy extra namebars in order to participate. However, if you do wish to participate and would like more information please feel free to contact me
jayp@eastlink.ca as I would be happy to give you any assistance that I can. On the other hand, we invite everyone who sees this post/email to adopt a hero and get to know them. The main goal of this project is to ensure that the memories and the names of Canada's heroes live on forever.
"Lest we forget"
Myself, Coach Dean Webber and the Midget C Huskies would like to thank Susan Webber for hand sewing all the namebars on the Jerseys. We would also like to thank Cpl Pam Evans, 12 Wing Imaging for taking such wonderful pictures of our team and helping us in honoring some very special Canadian Heroes.
